Today is the birthday of Herbert Croly, a magazine editor and one of the founders of The New Republic, born January 23, 1869 in New York City. His mother, Jane Cunningham Croly, and father, David Goodman Croly, were both well-known editors in their day. Though dead for eight decades, Croly was back in the news last year as one of the least-favorite people of the tea party movement.
