It was on this day (November 19) in 1978 that newspapers announced the end of Viva, launched five years earlier by Bob Guccione as a women's counterpart to Penthouse. Writer Nora Ephron, trashing the first issue in New York magazine, called it "what happens when a man who has only one magazine in him tries to put out a second." Guccione would go on to launch other magazines, including the science-fiction book Omni and another ironically short-lived title, Longevity.
I cannot remember the name of the esteemed Fiction Editor at Viva. She was responsible for selecting work by Richard Yates, Joyce Carol Oates, and many other first-rank writers. Any one help me out?
