The debut issue of George magazine, with John F. Kennedy, Jr., as editor and George Washington as namesake, went on sale on this day (September 26) in 1995. Explaining the magazine's mission in his inaugural editor's note, Kennedy said, "We believe that if we can make politics accessible by covering it in an entertaining and compelling way, popular interest and involvement in the process will follow." George survived Kennedy's death in a 1999 plane crash but published its farewell issue in 2001.
