The character played by Barbara Stanwyck in the perennial holiday movie "Christmas in Connecticut" (1945) is said to have been loosely based on Gladys Taber, a popular columnist for Ladies' Home Journal and Family Circle from the 1930s through the 1960s.
In the movie, Stanwyck's character works for a magazine called Smart Housekeeping.
Taber also wrote more than 50 books, many featuring her Connecticut farm, Stillmeadow, before her death in 1980.
Though not nearly as well-known today, Taber still has her devoted fans, such as the artist and author Susan Branch, as well as an active Friends group.
