“That’s right,” was the answer of the courteous magazine editor. “The British channel would be an excellent place for it.”
— This joke ran in newspapers throughout the U.S., as well as in Australia, Canada, England, and New Zealand. It seems to have made its first appearance in 1880 and its last (until now) in 1915.
