Van Slyke went on to a successful career as an executive in the fashion and fragrance industries. Then, in her 50s, she returned to writing and became a bestselling novelist. She died in 1979.

Among other accomplishments, she was reportedly the inspiration for the flamboyant fashion editor in the 1957 movie "Funny Face" and inventor or least popularizer of the word "pizzazz." In her 1984 memoir "D.V.," she remarked that, "I think part of my success as an editor came from never worrying about a fact, a cause, an atmosphere. It was me — projecting to the public."

... in 1915, a German torpedo sank the British passenger liner R.M.S. Lusitania off the southern coast of Ireland, killing about 1,195 passengers and crew (published accounts differ on the exact number). Among the victims were two well-known editors of the day, Elbert Hubbard, editor of The Philistine, and Herbert S. Stone, editor of The House Beautiful. Coincidentally, Hubbard seems to have been fascinated by the sinking of another British liner, the Titanic, three years earlier, and wrote a number of pieces, like this one, about it.
Also on this day, in 1961, Carmel Snow, former editor of Harper's Bazaar, died in her sleep at age 73. Reacting to the news, the photographer Richard Avedon, a Snow discovery, said, "She wasn't just an editor, she was the only editor."
